There have been major developments along my lifestyle journey, one of which is a discovery of Vegan biltong. Now for those of you who don’t know, biltong is a delicacy in South Africa usually made from gaming meat (Ostrich, Kudu and so on). I actually had a craving for this over a week ago but the craving soon passed. Imagine my surprise when cruising around the farmers market one Saturday and spotting someone who was selling biltong. Not only were they selling biltong but they were selling Cocotong. They were using the same spices they would normally use for standard biltong but covered coconut shavings with it. I have to say, it’s actually quite good. Who would have thought it.
I have also been experimenting with some baking. I am not a baker by any measure but I figure that I should try and make an effort to win some work colleagues over. Made some chocolate truffle balls – although the balls were sticky and didn’t quite shape into an actual ball but I think I managed to get away with it. I also made a chocolate cake and some chocolate cake brownies (spot the theme here). I think they were ok but I feel that I can do better. Next challenge will be a carrot cake of some kind. Who knows how that is going to turn out. I will do my best to stick to the recipe this time. I don’t know about you, but I tend to add extras in, it’s kind of a habit and a pet hate of my husbands. An extra spoonful here, a dash of an additional ingredient there – must stop doing that!
Something that I am noticing is that there seem to be more vegan products growing in supermarkets and stores in general. Kudos to Marks and Spencer for their range, fyi, their free from diary chocolate is divine – basically what is supporting my chocolate cake fetish at the moment.
